1999 Howard Prairie Regatta

1999 Howard Prairie Regatta, July 24/25, Rogue Yacht Club, Howard Prairie Lake near Ashland, OR

This regatta was, for all practical purposes, the practice for the 1999 Lido 14 Class Championships. This regatta consisted of 5 races (3 on Saturday, 2 on Sunday) with no throw-outs provided in the scoring. Traditionally the day starts with a Southerly wind which switches to a Northerly in the early afternoon. By the time racing started on the first day (noon), the wind was already blowing from the North at medium (14 knots?) speed. Immediately after the first start, the wind showed its tendency to shut off completely for brief periods (several minutes) before filling back in (typically from the same direction it was blowing). Those that kept from the middle of the lake and more towards the side the wind came from often saw huge payouts in getting the restored wind first. The second day saw the more typical Southerly wind which is warmer and slower. It was close racing at the top of the fleet with Pinckney, Papadopoulos, and Jenkins all potential winners. Mike showed his superior strategic skills and consistently went the right way more often than the rest. Also note that there was no "A"/"B" fleet distinction in this event.
