Sail Lido 14’s on San Francisco Bay? Many of us had doubts about the safety of sailing Lido’s in the typically choppy and windy conditions in San Francisco. But all the worry was put to rest as the weekend shaped up to be sunny, warm, and light winded. The racing was held on Richardson Bay which is "around the corner" from SFYC. It’s the body of water you look out when strolling along Sausalito’s waterfront. Papadopoulos/Faillers displayed their light air skills and struck gold in all three races Saturday. Sunday saw them slip to what looked like a 5th place finish but wound up 3rd because several boats mistook a shorten course directive from the race committee as a finish. Despite winning the regatta at that point, Papadopoulos/Faillers went on to sail and win the fifth and final race.
This regatta was the first running of the newly created Western Regional Championships. Thus, Papadopoulos/Faillers are our 1999 Western Regional Champs!
Jim and Justin Jackman took a commanding lead in the B fleet as well, giving credence to the notion that Newport Beach (home of Balboa YC) is a breeding ground for light air sailors. So much so that the PRO actually commented, at Sunday’s skipper’s meeting, that he thought Jim really should be sailing A’s. The B fleet, looking for relief from Jim’s domination vigorously applauded the PRO for his (apparent) wisdom. Unfortunately for the B’s there weren’t enough of them (10 minimum) to promote Jim into the A fleet.
There were a number of new faces at the event, most notably Don Krokus from Eugene and the Ed Still/Rick Fisher team from nearby Belvedere lagoon.
