The 31st running of the
Harry Wood Regatta, sponsored by Balboa Yacht Club and Lido 14 Fleet 1, was
held on March 26th. Five
windward/leeward races were held under sunny skies with a light to medium (but
shifty) westerly breeze. A total of
twenty boats entered into three divisions: Grand Master (skipper over 50), A
and B. In the A fleet, the team of Mark
Gaudio/Dustin Arnold took one race to get into the groove and then finished
first in all the remaining races to win by 9 points. In the B fleet, the team of Greg Boudreaux/Marty Bowman was
nearly as dominant with all firsts and one third, leaving 5 points to the next
competitor. The Grand Master division,
however, was a different case where only 6 points separated first through 4th
place. Ed Rodriquez, twice Class
Champion, sailing with Andrea Wood (granddaughter of Harry Wood!) prevailed.
This regatta was named after ABYC
member Harry Wood, who dominated local sailing in a number of different classes
after World War II. Through the 1960’s,
Harry won the Class Championship three times.
In the late 70’s Harry became quite ill and, in the belief that his time
was short, friends at BYC created this event to honor him. The regatta title, at the time, was the
“Harry Wood Memorial.” Harry went on to
live for another 31 years! Needless to
say, the regatta changed its name to Harry Wood Regatta. Alas, in December of 1999, Harry passed
away. To commemorate his passing, two
of his grand daughters (Heather and Andrea) sailed with two (still active) Lido
sailors (Gib Marshall and Ed Rodriguez).
It was a fitting moment that we hope to repeat.
