2004 Roy Woolsey Fall Regatta

September 26, 2004

Lido Isle Yacht Club

Both A and B flights sailed together but were scored separately.  As you can see from the scores in the A flight, just about everyone had a bad race.  This was directly related to tricky wind conditions were on certain parts of the course. For example, in race 1, Mark Gaudio nailed the start and first shift to take an early lead.  He was comfortably winning on the 2nd leg of the race when he (and a few followers) sailed into a combination of light wind and strong adverse current.  John Papadopoulos passed all the lead boats by skirting the current to take a nice lead after the leeward mark.  But it wasn't too long afterwards when John tried to pass large power boat to stern when it decided to stop to let Bob Yates, Kurt Wiese and Bob Martin play thru, leaving John to sail further and in the proverbial gas.  Ooops.

In the end, Mark Gaudio showed great skill by coming back at crucial times to take the overall lead.

A special thanks to all of those that helped run the regatta and to the great hospitality offered (free wine, beer, food) and the excellent trophies.

And lastly, a super special thanks to our best role model - Roy Woolsey - who has been sailing Lido 14s since 1958 and is still going strong.
