Sunday Report:

The weather system that came thru on Saturday, as is typical for So. Cal., came in from the South.  By Sunday morning, most of the front had passed thru and the wind had switched to a fresh clearing westerly breeze.  By fresh, I mean starting at 10mph and building to about 15mph.  Though the sustained winds subsided back down a bit, the puffs would still reach almost 20mph.  For several teams the conditions were a bit too much but for others, it was an outstanding time to find out where all the weak muscles are.

Of the two leading A teams from Saturday, Steve & Anne Schupak and the team of Kurt Wiese and John Papadopoulos, Team Schupak would have slightly better starts and equal speed up wind but in the end Kurt and John's ability to hike harder would give them a slight advantage that allowed them to point just a bit higher - just enough to hold their lane off the line better or perhaps to squeeze off any boats to weather.  More importantly, it gave them a slight advantage in controlling when and where to tack, etc.  And it was that last bit of advantage that gave them slightly better options that lead to winning ever so critical first upwind leg.

In the end, Kurt & John finished first every race on Sunday.

Saturday Report:

At 10 am sharp Saturday, the threatening storm clouds broke open and rained on Newport Beach for a few minutes.  Except for a few trivial sprinkles, that was the extent of the rainy forecast.  It wasn't until boats were heading back to to Newport Harbor Yacht Club after finishing four windward/leeward races were rain drops felt again - and not many at that.

So anyone staying home due to the inclement weather missed out on a very enjoyable day of sailing.

In addition to the clearing skies, a fairly steady breeze from the unusual direction of South East meant race courses that didn't come anywhere near the moored boats that are often obstacles at the WD Schock Memorial Regatta.

At the conclusion of the day's racing, the team of Kurt Wiese and John Papadopoulos lead the fleet with three 1st places and one 2nd, with Steve and Anne Schupak following with a 1, 2, 2, 3 combination.  Three races are scheduled for Sunday with a throw out provided if at least five races are completed - which shouldn't be a problem.

After racing, all the racers settled into the dining room to enjoy the taco bar, good conversation, and the warm fireplace.

Here are some photographs, courtesy of John and Rina.  We have hundreds of more - including rapid fire sequences of rounding the weather mark - that are available by request.
