W.D. Schock Memorial Regatta
(NHYC) March 7,8Celebrating the 40th year of Lido 14 racing brought an extra large turnout to the first annual W.D. Schock Memorial Regatta. Conceived by Tom Schock and hosted by Newport Harbor Yacht Club, this event turned out to be the biggest non-championships Lido 14 regatta in quite a few years.
For this special occasion, Dave Ullman gave a talk on local knowledge, virtually all of which was right on the money for the weekend event (at least for the sailing within the harbor ;)
The wind and El Nino gods were good to all as the weather was warm and the winds moderate. The courses sailed were exclusively windward/leewards with a mid course start. Local geographical effects were dominant on the wind patterns, with a secondary twist from the moderate tides. George Szabo showed up in a brand new Lido 14 (#6100) and showed to all that the new boat is up to snuff with the best of the classic Lido 14's. In fact, 13 of the 33 boats registered were new 6000 series Lidos with the winner in both A & B flights driving 6100 & 6087 respectively. There was one throw-out for the 9 races sailed.
It's interesting to note that despite Lido 14 Fleet 1's (Newport Beach, CA) dominance in numbers (21 local v.s. 12 visiting) and upper hand in local knowledge, visitors from San Diego showed the locals how to win on the Lido 14's home turf.
P.S. George also won the Schock Champion of Champions race held on March 6 in Harbor 20's. He handily won all three races against the current Lehman 12, Santana 20, Schock 35 champions plus representatives from several other Schock classes.
Congratulations George on the double win!
