Anacortes Yacht Club Club Races May 23, 1999

Conditions: 10-12 Northerly, Sunny! With little to no chop/swell

Papadopoulos makes a big splash in Anacortes (literally!). No sooner had Race 1 started, than John had sheeted in and hiked out, only to suffer the indignity of having the hiking strap break in his chartered (owner to remain anonymous but you know who you are!) boat, leaving him low and wet! Having trained for this event (John’s no stranger to falling overboard), he kept his boat speed up by driving (main sheet and tiller extension properly in hand) from the outside of the boat until his crew Stephanie took over the tiller duties while John clawed his way back into the boat.

In the carnage category, we had a broken rudder castings in both Garrett John’s and Bill Booth’s boats. But the carnage of the day award goes to Fred Abelman who illegally harvested kelp from the bay bottom using his mast head fly! Perhaps this qualifies as most organic mast head fly in the Lido 14 class as he continued to sail with it up there for a while. Fred, we all want to know the tricks of reading wind shifts with kelp.
