The 30^th running of the Harry Wood Regatta, sponsored by Balboa Yacht Club and Lido 14 Fleet 1, was held on March 17, 1999. Unlike past years, this regatta was sailed off the Balboa Yacht Club docks due to possible traffic conflicts with dredging equipment in the Turning Basin. This turned out to be a blessing as the wind was virtually non-existent. The first race got off on schedule and was finished in decent time. The race committee raised the bar by doubling length of race #2, only to have the wind shut off about 1/3 the way through the race. It was a real challenge sailing in the drifting conditions, especially given the adverse ebbing tide. As can be seen from the results, many boats didn't finish race 2 because they paddled in to save their sanity. We broke for lunch and waited for the wind to build. Given that we needed three races for the regatta to be completed (out of a scheduled 5 races), the Race Committee made every attempt to get one more race in. The wind rose ever so slightly and the last race was completed with nothing of great note. The three classes sailed where A, Grand Master, and B. The A's and Grand Master sailed together but were scored separately. In the end, food and beverages, plus fine take home and perpetual trophies made up for much of the misery.
