2002 Lido 14 Fleet 1 Championships
June 1, 2002
Hosted by Bahia Corinthian YC
Textbook perfect sunny weather with reasonably steady (but shifty!) winds from the West South West. Winds were 10+ knots, providing plenty of fully powered up racing.
Despite newcomer Brady Sih (crewed by John Papadopoulos) winning three out of five races, Kurt and Anne Wiese won the regatta by having no worse than a second place - giving them the victory by a one point margin. As always, there is more to the story. Kurt & Anne showed that they not only had top speed and boat handling but also came prepared with some of that mysterious "mojo" that we all wish we had a to get us out of trouble now and then. Mojo, karma, in the groove, eating your Wheaties, dumb luck...call it what you want but Kurt & Anne had lots of it. In two races, Kurt overcame what could only be described as tragic starts and in both cases Mr. Toad, his yellow Lido 14, ably found the express lane to get him back into the game as though nothing had happened. We are not talking about being a couple of boat lengths behind at the start - but more like 10+ boat lengths behind and having to bail out and go what seemed like the wrong direction to get clean lanes away from the sometimes confused rear of the fleet. Of course Bob Yates & Pat Kincaid and Brady & John still had a race to sail so they would go off and battle the battle - only to find Kurt coming out of proverbial corner of the field to be right there at weather mark - with a big grin on his face! Game to Kurt & Anne. Congratulations to both of them (and Mr. Toad!)
After having an evening to reconsider the events of the day, it's now perfectly clear that Kurt & Anne wholly deserve Fleet 1's "Dumb Luck" perpetual trophy. Congratulations again!
