SSYC SPRING SERIES
South Shore Yacht Club
April 6, May 11, June 15
Part 2 of the Series May 11th
Once again, beautiful weather in Newport Beach for Mothers Day. We had
nine (9!) boats racing today. In no particular order they were:
Larry Walter & Kim Zuelsdorf
Randy Welch & Pete Labahn
Dan Rosen & Dena?
Steve Mueller & ?
John Papadopoulos & Nikki De Relle
Dennis Potts & ?
George & ? (Friends of Steve Mueller)
Nancy Davidson & ?
Moz Lawlor & Cheryl
Of course, Scott Porter ran the whole show. Winds were moderate (10 ish) with big swings (typical in this part of the harbor).
Six races were held with John & Nikki winning
4 of the 6, Moz won one and the 6th I'm not sure. John and Nikki won this
month's portion of the Spring Series which continues on June 15th. Three
throw outs are going to be provided for the entire series and there are enough
people not showing up for all three parts to make the scoring pretty open (for
now).
Part 1 of the Series April 6th
Thanks to everyone who attended the first of the Lido Classics Spring Series
hosted by South Shore Yacht Club.
We had a small showing of five boats, but we had a very competitive field and a
steady 8-15 Knots of breeze.
We got in 4 races before a break in moderate 8-12 knots. We raced short
windward leeward twice around courses for about an hour and a half. After
our usual 25 min break at SSYC for fun, food and drinks, we hit the water for 3 more windward leeward as the wind built to 15 with gusts to 18.
Top honors go to our distinguished guest Brad Webb and Kim Bishop. Brad
came down for the day arriving from New Zealand after jumping off his last ride,
Team Oracle in the Louis Vuitton Cup. With 4 bullets and a total of 11 points
for 7 races they finished first for the day.
Larry and Kim Z picked up two Bullets including one on a classic (SN4000)
proving team skill vs. Fiberglass will win. They finished second for the
day and are the ones to watch out for once again, going into the spring series.
Style points to Moz and Cheryl who went a little too deep rounding the leeward
mark in the last race. Note..It was equipment failure related. Second
note: They started out the day with a Bullet in the first race, showing they are
ready for summer. We are glad to see Moz and Cheryl back now that ski season is
over and they assured me they would be back and try to stay on the top of the
water.
1. 4000 11 points Brad Webb and Kim Bishop
2. 6200 18 points Kim Zuelsdorf and Larry
Walter
3. GBR1 25 points Moz Lawler and Cheryl
4. 1007 26 points Dan Rosen and Dena
4. 6048 26 points Dennis Potts and Wendy
Bell
Thanks to our race committee Rob who enjoyed the bling, bling song aboard
Larry's impressive R/C skiff. Thanks to our guest Photographer, John
Papadopoulos. He got some great shots of everyone (and he will be studying them
later ..ha ha). John hopes to be back on the race course next time.
For those who missed the race you can still get in on the series. Remember
we are in a new series. Spring (April, May, June) and you now get 3 throw outs (average 4-6 races per day, 20 races per series)).
NO NEED TO CALL, NO ENTRY FORM NEEDED, NO COST...JUST SHOW UP AT SSYC DOCKS
AROUND NOON
We continue to have great wind, amazing competition, and lots of fun. Spring
Series is underway and we have big plans for summer series including Sunsplash
festival and possibly lake skinner in September.
Great Sailing
