2004 Lake Skinner Recreational Regatta
June 25-26, 2004
Robertson Repeats at Skinner Lake
Last weekend ideal sailing conditions at Lake Skinner—sunny, 75-80 F. temperature, winds 12-18, minimum traffic from other boats, launch docks all to ourselves. adequate parking, great R/C.
Four races scheduled Saturday ended up with Robertson and Team Kownacki tied with 6 points each, swapping firsts and seconds for promise of a great show on Sunday.
An evening of fun socializing and a great potluck barbeque left all stuffed and tired sailors to an early retirement.
Stu grabbed an early lead on race 5 Sunday and was never contested seriously. Team Kownacki got buried at the start and managed to salvage a 4th place finish dropping 2 points to Robertson. Race 6 saw Bob Martin in front at the finish the scores separated by another point as Robertson bagged a second. All relaxed as a local pilot put on a great airshow just to the west of the dam. After about 20 minutes of loops, hammerhead stalls, spins, loops and rolls the airshow stopped and race 7 commenced.
Top guns Robertson and Kownacki diced for position at the committee boat while Carroll and Naff elected to head for the pin and stay out of the ensuing fracas. As the horn sounded a huge left shift allowed the Skunk team (Carroll/Naff) to tack and cross the fleet, winning wire to wire. Robertson survived the shootout with a 3 point edge to capture the Debold Memorial trophy for a second year.
Awards in the parking lot enabled all to be headed home by 3:00 in the afternoon. A fine regatta, thanks to the Pattersons and a number of supporters from Mission Bay.
