The Fall Invitational this year was a little light for turnout but the racing was, as always top notch. There were a total of 10 Lido A’s with 3 boats sailing in the B flight. Saturday the breeze was up in the low to mid teens with all the crews hiking hard on the rails to keep the boats flat. The breeze filled early in the morning out of the South so the courses where not in their normal positions. The Snipe fleet, led by Lido 14 sailor Stan Betts as PRO, set Windward/Leeward courses which made for more action as the legs where slightly longer than the norm . Nancy Davidson and Missy York sailed an impressive straight set of bullets for Saturday’s sailing, with Bill Kenney brining home second for the day. Welcome Bill Kenney and Zeph Cearley to the Lido Fleet, we hope to see more of you two.
Stu and Tom battled for the top two spots in the A flight with Dave and Jeanne Smith sneaking in between the tacking duels. The racing within the body of the A flight was close with tight rounding s and busy legs. With the possibility for the throw-out it was anyone’s regatta by the end of the day.
Sunday’s two races were sailed in completely different breeze then that of Saturday. The so-called ‘normal’ breeze from the West / North West filled in, but only built to 8 or so knots. Again, Stan and crew did an excellent job setting up the start line and courses. Both Nancy and Tom cemented their positions in their respective fleets both bringing home first for the day.
The next regatta looks to be Turkey Day at ABYC and I hope to see a larger turnout as we will be sailing for the take home trophies of the bird for Thanksgiving dinner.
