2006 Camellia Cup Regatta
April 8&9, 2006
Hosted by Folsom Lake YC
[Ed. The following report was provided by
George Koch, a member of the renewed Sacramento, CA area Lido 14 fleet.
George just won the Camellia Cup's Open Centerboard division and the
Camellia Cup award racing his Lido 14. George is no stranger to
the Lido 14 - he actively raced in the 1960s and 1970s.] The Camellia Cup Regatta has been conducted by Folsom Lake Yacht Club each year in the springtime since about l965. For about ten years, Folsom Lake Yacht Club was almost 100% dinghies, consisting of Lido 14, Thistle, Korsar, Flying Junior and others. Then came many, many keelboats. The huge Lido Fleet 8 membership of 42 members steadily declined from 1972 downward and downward to zero in the '90's. Recently, Richard Leijonflycht, of nearby Lake Washington Sailing Club, rounded up several Lidos and studiously rejuvenated the original Fleet 8. April 8 and 9 were the dates for this regatta. Weather was light air and no rain, unlike most of our Spring this year. I had to sail Open Centerboard Division, as Richard and I were the only Lidos. We raced Portsmouth against 4 Banshees, 3 Buccaneers, and 1 Megabyte. There were 64 boats racing in all at the regatta. The other classes were Santana 20, Thistle, Catalina 22, C-15, Cruiser, Open Red Keel, Multihull. Well, you know the Lido. Lots of heel, weight forward, main way out and flat, same old stuff. We chugged along, drifting at times and then a little breeze - never over 6 or 7. With one discard, we ended up with 1, 4, 1, 1. The other one-design classes did not show sufficient dominance to defeat us, as the Camellia Cup perpetual trophy is factored by number in class and score in class. They were composed of many really good sailors who fought each other to lower winning division standings, so there we were. What can I say is that I had a great crew, Scott Frederickson, who never needed directions, an old friend who, bless him, weighs 140 pounds, so with my 180 we were in pretty good shape. Richard and I hope to increase the Lake Washington/Folsom Lake Fleet 8 back toward its glory days of old. We shall see. George Koch Lido 14 #4567 |
