2007-2008 Sunkist Series
Hosted by Balboa Yacht Club
November 3, December 1, January 5, February 2
Good luck was shining on John Papadopoulos as he had forgotten that his regular crew Stacie Brandt wasn't going to be in town the last day of the series. While waiting for her to show up, he finally figured out his error and scrambled to find a crew to complete the series. Dina Corsi's friend Mark was standing by and offered to fill in as crew - which was fantastic as he races on other types of sailboats and was comfortable with the task. The downside (minor compared to not racing) was the the duo weighed in at about 380 pounds and the winds were pretty light. Fortunately John and Stacie had previously built up a decent lead in the prior three days of the Series - which John nearly used up as he finished well back in the pack in the remaining two races. Walter and Terry Johnson were hard charging with a start to finish win in Race 7 and were briefly far enough ahead of John and Mark in Race 8 to win the overall Series. Walter and Terry needed to finish just a few places higher to win the regatta and, like many sailors that day, they found that consistency during this last day of racing, was hard to come by - leaving John with the overall win.

The first Saturday of November, December, January and February are the dates for "inside" portion of the Sunkist Series Saturdays where dinghys and Harbor 20's race. The classes that race typically include Harbor 20s, Thistles, Balboa 13s, Lasers, Lidos, Twichells, and Sr. Sabots.
The November date also includes the CHOC Fundraising Regatta which scores the results of the Sunkist Series for those that make donations to Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) Regatta. Racers are encouraged to sign up for both events to support CHOC and to double their chances of winning a trophy. Please read the following document to learn more. CHOC Brochure (PDF)
The racing consists of two races each day of the series with starts and finishes at the race tower at BYC. Courses utilize the lower portion of the bay. There is a short break between races (mostly to allow other classes to finish) which permits a quick refreshment trip up to the BYC bar. The scoring is set up so that there should be two throw-outs if all eight races are held. This means you can miss a day and still be in the running.
