May 24&25, 2008
The team of John Papadopoulos and Stacie Brandt, both members of Balboa Yacht Club, found the sailing conditions to their liking as they won 5 of 6 races. On Saturday, the wind was from the SSW and was moderate - perhaps puffs to 15 mph. These conditions favored the left side of the course which Papadopoulos/Brandt seemed to take advantage of more than any other team - often finding both good pressure and angle to either extend an early lead or to find a passing lane up the first windward leg.
On Sunday the winds were significantly lighter - in one race darn close to drifting - and further toward the west - which favored the middle and right sides of the course, as was best demonstrated by the team of Ross Nemeroff and Robert Rice who were able to use the right side to catch up to Papadopoulos/Brandt in race 5 (who sailed more up the middle). Nemeroff/Rice were capitalized on (in hindsight) Papadopoulos' decision to gybe set at the offset mark - which promptly slowed them down. Nemeroff/Rice focused on keeping boat speed and were able to hold onto their lead all the way down the leg and all the way back up to the finish (near the windward mark).
In the course of racing Lido 14s, it is normal to constantly question whether or not you are sailing at top speed, on the lifted tack, towards the next puff, in a tactically advantageous position - not to your concerns of whether or not your crew will repeat their prior roll tack performance! What's definitely not a concern on all but one person's mind is just how many toys and boat accessories your crew can drag thru the water! For Bob Little, this appears to be a completely normal consideration and it constantly amazes me just how outstanding a parent and a sailor he continues to be to not only put up with his crew's behavior but perhaps to condone it while still competing at the top level of the sport of Lido 14 racing. My hat (if I were to wear one) is off to him!
Lastly, special thanks to Mark Schryer (our PRO) and his team - who had an especially demanding day on Saturday.
A and B division racers sailed together but were scored separately. Please visit ABYC's website for photos, press releases, and the full race scores for all classes at the regatta.
