Heavily favored and multiple past Lido 14 District II (No. California) Champion Tom Jenkins and his crew Andrew Brown soon found out that not only were they racing for the championship title but they also had to defend against party crashers from District I who came to "show a little love and support."
John Papadopoulos & Stacie Brandt, Steve & Kris Potter, Dave Carroll, and current class champion Stu Robertson and Paul Anctil, Stu's championship winning crew from 2005, all showed up to this one day event with a variety of goals. For several, it was fond memories of the long ago Morro Bay Invitational, for Steve & Kris it was a chance to test drive a used boat for sale in the Morro Bay area that Fleet 2 (Marina Del Rey, CA) wants to lend out to it's prospective members. And without a doubt several teams were there to ensure that Tom Jenkins and Andrew Brown had to sail hard to win a District Championships!
With five races (no discards), and the usual litany of issues that makes Morro Bay so special (lots of eel grass, shallow areas, fields of moored boats, barking dogs, barking sea lions, and more), it was a challenge to all thirteen competitors. However it was especially difficult for those not familiar with Morro Bay as marks of the course were sometimes very hard to find. In the end, Tom and Andrew were victorious; beating all other District II racers as well as current class champion Stu Robertson and the others from District I.
The top five finishers in the District II Championships were awarded trophies that consisted of framed photographs taken that very day. Very cool! The top three finishers in the non-championship provided take home trophies too. Thanks!
