2008 MBYC Fall Invitational Regatta

Hosted by Mission Bay YC

Oct. 25&26, 2008

In 2007 the Fall Invitational was cancelled do to concern of the growing wild fires in the region.  The organizers seemed to have taken the time to design a new regatta format to keep this long running regatta vital and interesting - perhaps to give a taste of what the 2009 Lido 14 Class Championships will be like.  In addition, this regatta served as the District 1 Championships.

The new format was a variation of the Lido 14 Class Championships - a Qualifying Series and a Championship Series.  On Saturday, Lido 14s raced all together (no A or B divisions) and from that came a ranking to split the teams into Gold and Silver, or as they were called in the NOR, “There Ain’t No Marshmallows Here” division and the “The Marshmallow” division.  If you don't know what a Marshmallow is in the sport of sailing, you might want to inquire.

There was a twist, however, in that the scores of the qualifier were used to break the fleet into two AND they were also used again (in the form of the qualifier ranking) in computing the final score.  Lastly, and a bit confusing, the final scoring allowed a throw out on what was a short final series.  Though it seemed a bit peculiar to score the regatta in this manner, apparently it wasn't to the disliking of the competitors and in the end, the top performing team was properly recognized.  Stu and Erin Robertson sailed well to finish first in the qualifiers and then continued sailing well by winning two out of the three finals races - they had a mechanical failure in one race.  So congratulations to Stu & Erin for winning the regatta and the District 1 Championships.

Also deserving special recognition is the team of Dave Carroll and Mark Ryan.  First, Mark was recently appointed to be in charge of Fun and Mayhem in the Lido 14 Class.  It’s well known that those that have fun racing Lido 14s will be rewarded and it showed as they sailed a superb series of races on Sunday - finishing 2, 1, 2.  Excellent work guys!

By their own admission, Randy Carper and Pete LaBahn sailed better than they ever have - at times sailing way up in the top of the fleet and holding their own against the best.  Hopefully they will remember what the secret was to their much improved performance and show us some more again.
