June 6, 2009
Hosted by Bahia Corinthian YC
Sunny, beautiful cloud formations (with no chance of rain), winds in the 7 to 12mph range, moderate current across the course, and a bunch of sea weed floating thru in the early stages of the day. A gorgeous day to sail.
Walter Johnson clicked in the first race and immediately folks were thinking - here we go again - another show by Walter. But that was quickly put to bed as Kurt had an uncanny way of getting thru the sometimes difficult starts (lots of messy situations) to poke out to the left a bit, get a bit of an advantage, sail smartly when needed, to sail a string of three wins. These weren't totally unchallenged wins - most notably John & Stacie were occasionally pretty close. After race 4, the fleet took a break at BYC.
In Race 5, John & Stacie were just barely leading the race (with Kurt and Walter very close behind) when Kurt fouled John at the weather mark. While John and Kurt were literally drifting hooked to each other, Walter and Len calmly sailed around them and held on to the win. John recovered slightly and Kurt, who did some circles, didn't. 3 Minute Justice was held right after the race and Kurt's protest against John was discarded.
Five races (out of 7) were needed to get a throwout so at that point in time, Kurt had 7 points, Walter had 8 points, and John had 9. Both Walter and Kurt had already sailed what would be their throwout race - John hadn't. In short, the regatta could go any way but the momentum was still in Kurt and Walter's camp.
Details of Race 6 are vague - so all we have are the results below - which show that Walter was now tied with Kurt with 9 points and John was 3 points back at 12. So it was a contest between Kurt and Walter and a really long shot for John - if he won and both Kurt and Walter did very badly, he could win too.
And once again, Kurt showed he had the consistency to hold on to the win - taking home the Fleet 1 Championships.
Chris & Anita Rulla were awarded the Harrowby Trophy for the top placing "B" team.
Next year, the regatta will be NHYC - Kurt's club.
A big thank you to Pat Kincaid, Jess Jerry, and all the others at BCYC that made this regatta possible.
