2009 Super Bowl Regatta

Hosted by Santa Monica Windjammers YC

January 25, 2009

A blustery day following a winter storm also brought blue skies, warm temperatures, puffy white clouds, and 18 boats to the Super Bowl Regatta.  Once out on the race course, winds built to the high teens with puffs into the 20s.  Conditions were a bit difficult to sail in - but nobody capsized.  The winds were westerly which meant that the fleet had fairly long windward legs up the channel however the race course was often quite lopsided - forcing crowded RC boat starts to get the to the favored right side.

Up thru three races, three boats in a tight scoring cluster - Eric Bohman/Jeff Zook with 8 points, Kelly Cantley/Kevin Thomas and John Papadopoulos/Kim Stuart with 9.  In Race 4, Eric & Jeff lead the to the weather mark with John & Kim in second and Walter and Tanya and crew in 3rd.  About half way down the run, Eric lost a shroud (he says that he has new shrouds at home waiting to be installed!) and, of course, his rig came down.  John & Kim passed by but soon Walter came SCREAMING by on a plane.  John, now realizing his error - scooted back in the boat and took off too.  A hard lesson to learn - always keep a watch out aft for new wind and faster boats.  Walter won that race in style but it wasn't enough to boost him into the trophies.

Fairly new Lido 14 racers Kathy Reed and Cindy Martenich sailed a perfectly consistent series of 2nd places to win the B division.  She's now an A sailor.

The RC, seeing one boat down, called the regatta at 4 races (5 were scheduled).  John & Kim towed Eric & Jeff back most of the way to the club.  After boats were cleaned up and put away, everyone met up at the SMWYC bar for munchies, beverages, and story telling.

In addition to the regatta trophies (3 deep in A division, 5 deep in B division), team trophies were awarded to the Fleet with the lowest and highest 3 combined scores (A and B together).  Fleet 6 won the "Bragging Rights" trophy with 35 points, Fleet 1 in 2nd with 44, and Fleet 2 won the "Crying Towel" trophy for their 57 points.  Great fun!

Thanks to Steve Potter for organizing the regatta!
