May 28 & 29, 2010
Hosted by Alamitos Bay Yacht Club
Summer is here! With throngs of people traveling to the beaches, it was a fresh change of pace to go sailing on the waters adjacent to Alamitos Bay Yacht Club. It also was the first real showdown between three of the top skippers in the Lido 14 Class (Stu Robertson, Bruce Golison, and Kurt Wiese). In that regard it could be said this was a show case for the Lido 14 Class Championships being sailed in July.
If you view the regatta as a test event, both Bruce and Kurt gave a decent show but still have a way to go before they can expect to unseat Stu. Racing started with Kurt and John comfortably winning the first race and they were well on their way to winning the second race when confusion as to how many laps there were in the race. First it was Stu's mistake in thinking it was a 1 lap race, then it was Kurt and John who still probably think that they were the only ones that sailed the proper number of laps. Stu recovered to a 5th while Kurt and John sailed one more lap than everyone else and ended up 15th.
In races 3 and 4, Bruce and Stu emerged as the more consistent racers with Bruce finishing up the day in the lead.
Sunday saw Stu consolidate with Bruce trying to hang, while Kurt and John decided to take a leave of absence in the middle of race 5 to hold a summit meeting over global warming. After their summit, they got back into the game and won Race 6 which saw a hefty roll tacking duel up to the finish line - that momentarily looked like Stu had won but at the last crossing, Stu lost. So briefly, Kurt looked like he was back in the game.
Going into the last race, Stu had 8 points and Bruce had 10, so all Bruce needed to win was to put a boat between him and Stu. And the likely candidate to be that middle boat, Kurt and John, were off in the weeds struggling to get into the game.
Obviously Stu and Michael get full recognition for winning the regatta. For the betting crowd, there's still a bit of interest in seeing this same match up again and by the looks of it, the High Sierra Regatta on Huntington Lake will provide that opportunity!
Side notes. The son and father team of Collin and Pat Kincaid sailed quite well and were, at times, very challenging to race against. They hail from Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club in Newport Beach. You may know Pat from his many years of sailing with Bob Yates. For a variety of reasons, Bob is not able to sail is Lido 14 much this year - so Pat is getting in some good crewing for his son. New to the race course is ABYC Vice Commodore Jeff Merrill. Unfortunately, he's just learning the that old boats are synonymous with things breaking. He's now equipped with a new set of shrouds and forestay and a repair to the bow tang - his mast should stay up for quite a while now. A welcome too to Haley and Guillemro Ferramola, relations to long time ABYC member and Lido 14 racer Gabe Ferramola. Chuck & Paige Tripp and Steve and Cameron Bloemeke also represent more recent additions to the Lido 14 fleet. In summary, there were a good number of new faces and/or new combinations making up teams at this regatta.
