Yale Lake, Wa
Ron and Nicole Runyan wrestle the District 6 Championship from long-time incumbents
Willamette Sailing Club hosted its annual Al Morris Memorial Regatta July 31-Aug 1 at Yale Lake Washington under the shadow of Mount St. Helens. This venue has twice hosted the Lido 14 Class Championships, and is a superb lake for Lido sailing.
Nine Lidos from three of the District’s four active fleets participated, including the current and most recent past district champions: Steve Orsini and Garrett Johns, both from Fleet 78 in Anacortes WA. The weather was overcast on Saturday but sunny on Sunday, and for most of the races Yale Lake delivered its trademark 8-12 knot west winds with periodic shifts.
The race committee delivered five races Saturday. Ron and Nicole Runyan took the day with Garrett and Halsey Johns close behind. Saturday night the Lido gang gathered in the Cougar Park Campground for a chicken dinner care of Mark and Cathy Sandifer. Mark Sandifer was elected and graciously agreed to continue as our District Secretary.
The first race Sunday was punctuated by a nasty collision between Mark Sandifer and Toby King resulting in a badly torn jib on Mark’s boat. He had originally planned to retire from the regatta, but his wife and crew Cathy protested. She wanted to keep sailing. Remarkably, Mark was able to tie his jib together with ingenious use of a knife and extra lines and continued to race remarkably competitively with Johns and Orsini for the final two races, earning Mark the MacGyver award. Thankfully, Toby’s boat was undamaged.
Ron and Nicole continued their speedy ways on Sunday, including dramatic final leg comebacks both days. The Runyan’s at times seem to benefit from lifts not enjoyed by boats even a few lengths away, and their centerboard problems seemed a thing of the past, thanks to help from Steve Orsini and WD Schock earlier in this summer. Steve and Garrett have traded the District Championship title for the last several years and graciously congratulated the new 2010 champions. Next year the district championship will be held in Anacortes, WA.
