2010 Super Bowl Charity Regatta

Hosted by Santa Monica Windjammers YC in Marina Del Rey, CA

January 31, 2010

In 2009, there were 7 A's and 11 B's sailing in the Lido 14 division of this regatta.  This year, there were 13 and 14, respectively, 17 Lasers, and 5 C-15s.  These 49 boats made the pre-start area a bit crowded at times but otherwise there seemed to be plenty of sailing area.  To the thinking of those familiar with dinghy racing in Marina Del Rey, this may have been the largest turnout of any races held "inside" (i.e. not out in the ocean).

So why were there so many more boats than before?  The credit primarily goes to the Potter's turning this event into a charity regatta for the benefit of the The Wellness Community.  The Wellness Community is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free emotional support, education and hope for people with cancer and their loved ones.  You can learn more them at www.thewellnesscommunity.orgOver a thousand dollars were donated by competitors and sponsors!

The weather forecast was for sunny skies and temperatures in the 60s but VERY light winds.  And that's exactly how the day started out.  So it took quite a while for boats to make it out to the race course but by the time of the first warning signal, the breeze had filled in nicely.

The venue for Lido 14 racing in Marina Del Rey is between the jetties leading out to the ocean - which leaves a rectangular space hundreds of feet wide and about 3/4's of a mile long.  When the winds are "normal", this venue works quite well (despite the narrowness of the racing area) and today was one of those days.

The race committee set as long as a  windward-leeward course as the space really allowed with the start finish line approximately mid way between them.  In the first race, of all 49 boats racing, only one sailed to the windward mark.  Oops!  The one team that sailed the course?  Christophe Killian and Harrison Vandervort.  Christophe has been skippering his family Lido 14 for several years - sometimes with is father, sometimes with his mother, and now with Harrison Vandervort.  These Balboa Yacht Club juniors recently teamed up to win the Ullman B regatta.

Unfortunately, the only rational remedy to the situation was to abandon the races - mostly because of the lack of a time limit.  In other words, anyone figuring out that they hadn't sailed the course could unwind and finish properly - which would have taken quite a while.  So Christophe's and Harrison's victory was short lived.  More importantly, the race committee moved forward were able to complete four races.  And to not too many people's surprise, Christophe and Harrison simply dominated the B division - finishing with all firsts.  And seeing that they won a B division with more than 10 boats, Christophe is now a Lido 14 A skipper!  Congratulations and welcome to the A Fleet!

In the A fleet, current Lido 14 Class Champion, sailing with Mike Anctil, performed quite well too - winning three of the four races but finished 4th in the final race - hanging on to win by a single point over Eric Heim.
