Early Bird Report...Robertson surprised to learn that he won the Harry Wood Memorial Regatta!
An overcast and slightly blustery day provided outstanding Lido 14 racing conditions on Newport Bay for the Harry Wood Memorial Regatta. With winds in vicinity of 10 mph, boats were fully powered up all day long, hiking muscles being worked, and inattention rewarded with capsizes.
Walter Johnson just blew away the competition in the first race owing to a great start. Kurt and Anne Wiese then stepped up and won the next two races. In the fourth race, the Wiese's were over early and were trapped by boats to windward and leeward - making the trip back to the start line just miserable. Due to some confusion about the OCS hails, Stu and Erin Robertson went back too. In the end, these two boats were both having terrible races. Only the Wiese's experience got worse - as they were trapped again going into the leeward mark - they were stuck without mark room rights had little option than to pass the mark to starboard - missing the rounding all together. They never recuperated and were last seen sailing home. Stu, faired slightly better thru that rounding and ended up with an 8th place finish. With no throw outs offered in this five race regatta, Stu assumed that there was no chance at winning. But of kept at it and finished the series with a first place in race number 5.
What Stu and Erin hadn't figured out was that everyone else was keeping at least an 8 in their score tally too. In fact, most everyone would have been delighted if their worst race was an 8th. Normally to A sailors have very accurate ideas of how their nearest competitors are fairing - it's essential to know who to defend against when things get tight and close to the end of the regatta. Not knowing that everyone else had a bad score is unusual in our sport but in this regatta, there were 15 "A" teams and 5 "B" teams sailing together and at times the fleet was quite tight. And consistency was really hard to come by. So it wasn't surprising that everyone - including Stu and Erin - were surprised that they had won the regatta.
