A very brief and not verified history of the Harry Wood Regatta.
Harry Wood lived in Long Beach was a multiple national champion in the Lido 14 class during the 1960s. He took ill with cancer in the late 1960s - his prognosis wasn't good. Roh Lohman, a top Lido 14 racer out of Balboa Yacht Club and Lido 14 Fleet 1, is given credit for coming up with the idea of renaming Balboa Yacht Club's Lido 14 Fleet 1 Open Regatta to the Harry Wood Regatta in honor of Harry. Harry donated the A fleet and B fleet perpetual trophies AND he survived the cancer!
So the story goes, once there was a regatta in Huntington Harbor, CA that offered a Grand Master division for skippers over 50. Al Perez, of Fleet 1, raced it shortly after turning 50. He liked it a lot and suggested to his friend Harry Wood that a Grand Master division should be added to the Harry Wood Regatta. Harry agreed and he donated the famous Grand Master Perpetual Trophy (a silver Lazy Susan purchased owned by the Wood family.) In 1978, the very first year that the new Grand Master division was contested, Al Perez won. In the second year, Harry won his own trophy!
Harry Wood passed away in December of 1999. In subsequent years, Harry Wood Regatta was renamed the Harry Wood Memorial regatta. Barry Wood, Harry's son, regularly races in the regatta with his daughters. Barry won the Grand Master division in 2003.
