Lido 14s Hosted by Alamitos Bay YC
February 20 & 21, 2010
This was the 81st running of the SCYA Midwinter Regatta, a region wide event that offers racing at many clubs across Southern California. As has been the long standing tradition, the Lido 14 class races at Alamitos Bay YC. What most Lido 14 racers don't know is that this is a very special event for several reasons. It is one of a very few (if any) regattas where you can expect a race course free of other classes of boats, plenty of windward/leeward courses, no obstructions or limited racing areas, and little, if any, other boating traffic crossing the race course. In other words, it's darn near the best event one could wish for to Lido 14s. The last major regatta at ABYC, the Turkey Day Regatta, is especially known for the multitudes of Naples Sabots on the course so it's a real treat to have the water to ourselves. Secondly, this regatta offers the Jim Tyler perpetual trophy to the winner of the Lido 14 class. It's a beautiful trophy and the prestige of winning it is high.
The forecast for the weekend was for mild winds, partly cloudy skies, and a slight chance of rain. In fact, the winds were outstanding - ranging from 9 to 12mph on Saturday and from 10 to 16mph on Sunday, the clouds were beautiful (not just gray overcast), and there was no rain!
From the very beginning, it looked like Walter Johnson and Nikki Benz were going to be the team to beat. In the first two races they found good wind and set the pace. Kurt Wiese & John Papadopoulos challenged Walter & Nikki for the lead on several occasions but they had several kinks in their team work and equipment that set them back a bit. In what felt like a defining moment, these two teams were neck and neck to the finish - only to see Stu Robertson and Mike Anctil, who had been back in third and left to his own, sneak by to win by a nose. Stu & Mike went on to win the next race which signaled that he was the boat to beat but in in Race 4, Kurt & John connected the dots well and held onto first place to the finish. Saturday's racing concluded with Stu & Mike in 1st with 8 points, Walter & Nikki and Kurt & John tied at 10. All three had a 4th place finish in their scores so it was going to be an interesting Sunday.
On Sunday the winds were shaping up to be stronger and in fact they continued to build thru the afternoon. In Race 5 Stu, took an early lead with Mark & Sarah Ryan and Steve & Anne Schupak, to name a few, also sailing well. Kurt & John, in the mean time, had been over early and were dead last. But that just made them work harder and they were able to sail thru the fleet and get back into the game. And Stu's rig fell down, leaving the lead in the hands of Mark & Sarah. As the race went on, it became a contest between Mark & Sarah and Kurt & John - with the lead exchanging between the two. In the end, Mark and Sarah prevailed.
In Race 6 - Paul Makielski, Dan Gilboa & John Gresham, Kurt & John, and Grant Hill & Brandon Corn all were pushing hard in the heavy (and puffy) winds. The race was a long one - 4 times around windward/leeward course - and it took virtually every one of those laps to sort out winning team - Kurt & John.
The winds were steadily building and with one rid down and another boat capsized, the race committee decided that six completed races (out of a 7 scheduled) was good enough to call it a regatta. So the regatta went to Kurt Wiese & John Papadopoulos in the A Fleet and Eric & Davis Bakker in the Bs.
